1814: What can you tell us of your collaboration with Matsuda?

GK: When Koba first contacted me we had a bit of difficulty because at that time, most of his crew at Matsuda spoke very little English, and I , as you would expect, spoke not an ounce of Japanese. We began to communicate with the help of an interpreter in New York, who later went on all of our shoots, but mainly, I drew little sketches of what I had in mind, photocopied them and sent them to him as 'idea' books. To arrive at the ideas for the images I constructed self assigned themes for each project which I never really actually shared with Koba. We were concerned visually, but themes and meanings were my own personal structure so to speak.
