Before Frank - Amy Winehouse, New York, 2003 - Photographs by Charles Moriarty

"Nothing was written down and the only advice I was given was, 'make it look like London at night'. But we were in New York, I thought 'ARE YOU Mental'. Amy arrived  where I was staying for one night and our task was to shoot the inlay for Frank.

We waited for night to come, and with it came an enormous thunder and lightning storm, so we waited, but eventually at 3:00 a.m. we gave up, the images seen here are the result of the following morning when we knew we needed to do something different, I'm pretty sure this is the very first time Amy ever did her beehive for camera.

These images reflect a side of Amy I believe many have never seen, she was 19 and still recording for the release of her first album Frank. I knew Amy would be a great success, I just never knew the road ahead would be so tumultuous…" - Charles Moriarty www.1814mag.com
